Lyon 4-3 Lille (May 7, 2024) Game analysis –

May 6 (Reuters) – A late goal from Olympique Lyonnais’ Mama Balde secured a 4-3 win against Lille on Monday as the home side missed the chance to climb to third in Ligue 1.

Lille remained on 55 points, two behind surprise package Brest, who drew with Nantes on Saturday, while Lyon reached 47 points to climb to seventh and keep their European football hopes alive.

Second-placed AS Monaco has 61 points, nine behind Paris St Germain, who have already secured the league title.

Lille dominated the early exchanges and took the lead after 21 minutes with Bafode Diakite’s towering header from a set-piece before substitute Edon Zhegrova doubled the lead in the 37th.

Lyon looked better after the break and pulled one back with Said Benrahma’s try in the 65th minute before Malick Fofana equalized with a tap-in after a fine solo run from Mama Balde eight minutes from time.

Lille came close to victory again when Diakite restored the lead just three minutes later with his second of the evening. But Lyon captain Alexandre Lacazette scored in the 88th minute to level the score at 3-3 again, before Balde’s stoppage-time header sealed the comeback victory for Lyon.
