Padres 3-1 Braves (May 18, 2024) Game Recap

ATLANTA — – Matt Waldron hit a career-high 10 and the San Diego Padres bounced back after being swept in their final series with a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.

Waldron (2-5) gave up one run, five hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Jurickson Profar was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored and Jake Cronenworth was 3 for 5 with an RBI for the Padres, who totaled 13 hits (all singles).

Max Fried (3-2), coming off a six-inning no-hit outing against the Mets, was touched for nine hits and three runs in 4 1/3 innings. He walked three batters and struck out two in 88 pitches.

Jeremiah Estrada recorded his first save of the season with a perfect ninth with three strikeouts after the Padres used closer Robert Suarez in the eighth against the heart of the Braves order. The Braves scored a season-high 18 goals.

The Braves threatened in the eighth after a Chadwick Tromp put runners on second and third with two outs. Suarez struck out Michael Harris II to end the threat.

Matt Olson went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Braves.

The Padres took the lead for good with a three-run third inning after a string of singles. Luis Arraez led off with a single to left, and scored two batters later on a single by Profar. Cronenworth followed with another RBI single, and Manny Machado hit the third run of the game when the Braves failed to connect on a double play grounder thanks to a poor throw by Ozzie Albies. Machado, who went 0 for 4 and is hitting .217, fell to fifth in the order.

The Braves scored a run early in the first inning on an unusual play. With Ronald Acuña Jr. on third and Albies on second, Olson delivered a ball to short left field. Acuña scored easily, but Albies hesitated before breaking through to third and was thrown out by Profar.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – – DeWanna Bonner had 22 points and six of Connecticut’s 14 steals, DiJonai Carrington added 21 points and the Sun used a big fourth quarter to beat the Washington Mystics 84-77 on Friday night.

Connecticut has won 10 of its last 11 regular-season meetings with Washington.

Connecticut trailed 62-56 with 8:18 left in the fourth quarter before scoring the next 15 points to take a 71-62 lead. The Sun finished with 32 points in the quarter after scoring just 36 points in the first half.

No. 21/RV Softball falls in NCAA Opener to No. RV/22 Oregon, 8-0

NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 21/RV nationally ranked Boston University softball team made its 13th NCAA tournament appearance, falling 8-0 to No. RV/24 Oregon on Friday night at Love’s Field at the University of Oklahoma.

With their seventh run-rule win of the season, the Ducks (29-19) advance to Saturday’s winner’s game against the three-time defending champion Sooners at 3:00 PM ET. The Terriers (52-5-1) were undone by a season-high four errors to have their 11-game win streak snapped and will next face Horizon League champion Cleveland State in the first elimination game of the Norman Regional at 5:30 p.m. ET. .
